In its 5th generation presentation, the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid busts a move. A week-long test drive underscored how much this small SUV likes to strut its new stuff, which includes a unibody chassis that’s 57% more rigid than the prior model. That increased stiffness helps provide a smoother ride for occupants. For the driver, mirror views are substantially improved. Side mirror glances provide better field of vision via lower mirror positioning on the doors. The rearview mirror adds vision-strength with a wide angle, high-definition camera view from the vehicle’s rear that -- when driver-activated-- displays in the mirror. RAV4 Hybrid’s twin electric drive motors are mounted coaxially (versus the prior inline mounting), resulting in a smaller package and reduced frictional losses.
The Toyota Hybrid System nets a combined 219 horsepower output via a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and the electric motor assist. A new nickel-metal hydride battery pack is packaged under the rear seats. Cargo volume behind the second row seat is 37.6 cubic feet. The hybrid powertrain is paired with an electronically controlled continuous variable transmission (CVT). RAV4 is sold in 4 trims: LE, XLE, XSE, and Limited. As a new addition to the trim levels, the XSE has a sport-tuned suspension, piano-black exterior accents, and other sport-flavored treatments. The tested 105.9-inch wheelbase RAV4 Hybrid Limited collects estimated mpg of 41 city/37 highway, and carries a base MSRP of $35,700.
