After more than 1,000 miles of driving on rural and urban roads, this test driver regards the fourth-generation Rio as a truly vibrant car. This subcompact’s snazzy look belies a very capable handling car. The 101.6-inch wheelbase Rio EX 5-door hatchback didn’t stumble on hills, curves, or soft-sand treks. New suspension geometry gives the Rio its sharp handling. Redesigned front seats provide a comfortable and supportive cushion. The 4th generation front wheel drive Rio’s platform is slightly longer, wider, and lower than its predecessor. This roomy subcompact lets adults stretch-out-the legs, even rear seat riders. Powering the Rio is a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder producing 130 horsepower at 6300 rpm and 119 pounds-feet of torque at 4850 rpm. Compared to the previous model, the engine drops 8 horsepower and 4 pounds-feet of torque, while fuel efficiency gains 1-2 mpg with the re-calibrated, carryover engine. The 2018 engine mates with a either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. Five-door Rio is offered in LX, S, and EX trims. (Rio is also available as a sedan.) Test driven 5-door Rio EX with automatic transmission collects estimated mpg of 28 city/37 highway and carries a base MSRP of $18,700.
