Since its debut in the 2015 model year, the Jeep Renegade has given the small utility vehicle segment a ruggedly appealing candidate. While the Renegade is a great highway patroller, it’s also an off-road trooper in its Trailhawk 4x4 presentation. (Other model trims are Sport, Latitude, and Limited.) Renegade Trailhawk earns its best-in-class Trail Rated 4x4 credibility via standard Jeep Active Drive Low (20:1 crawl ratio), hill descent control, and a slew of other technology-enabled features. The Renegade Trailhawk 4x4 provides 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and 30.5-degree approach/34.3-degree departure angles.
The test driven Renegade Trailhawk 4x4 was powered by a 2.4-liter Tigershark 4-cylinder MultiAir2 engine producing 180 horsepower and 175 pounds-feet of torque. It was fitted with the trailer tow package, which enables an up to 2000-pound towing capability. This 2.4-liter engine mates to the segment’s first nine-speed automatic transmission. (Renegade’s 1.4-liter MultiAir turbo 4-cylinder base engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission.) New for 2016 features include the Beats premium audio system and rain sensing wipers. The test driven Renegade Trailhawk 4x4 collects estimated mpg of 21 city/29 highway and carries an MSRP of $26,495.
