The first Mazda Miata hit the U.S. market in the 1990 model year. But 25 years later, the Miata (aka MX-5) is still a flat-out fun, irresistible two-door. And this hot-to-trot convertible’s retractable hardtop enhances the fun-factor. (Just unlatch the roof in two overhead spots, push and hold a button, and the hardtop automatically retracts for open-air driving.) The sports car’s 50:50 front-to-rear weight ratio underscores why this car easily assumes the role of a driver’s best friend. Miata is sold in Sport, Club, and Grand Touring trims. A limited edition (100 models in the U.S.) 25th anniversary Miata has special badging and a Soul Red Metallic premium coat.
Powering the 91.7-inch wheelbase Miata is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that grabs 167 horsepower at 7000 rpm and 140 pounds-feet of torque at 5000 rpm when equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission. (A 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission are also offered.) Miata has a double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension. The third-generation Miata debuted in the 2006 model year. Minor refreshments occurred in the 2013 model year. Estimated mpg for Miata with manual transmission is 21 city and 28 highway. MSRP for MX-5 Miata Grand Touring with the power hardtop roof is $29,450.
