When the Ford Escape debuted in the 2001 model year, body-on-frame architectures dominated the SUV market. Ford took a different approach, opting for a monocoque design and fully independent suspension. The Escape is still a rebel, continuing to separate itself from the pack. With a full redesign in the 2013 model year, Escape is essentially unchanged for the 2014 model year. The new cues for 2014 include a standard rearview camera on all trim levels, full leather seats as part of the standard fare on the top-of-the-line trim as well as new exterior colors (Sunset Metallic and Karat Gold). Escape is sold in S, SE, and Titanium trims.
A trio of engine choices are offered. The base front wheel drive model is powered by a 2.5-liter 168 horsepower 4-cylinder. A 1.6-liter EcoBoost 178 horsepower 4-cylinder and a 2.0-liter EcoBoost 240 horsepower 4-cylinder are available with 4WD. Escape doesn’t skimp on cargo space with 34.3 cubic feet behind the second row and 68.1 cubic feet behind the front row. The test driven 105.9-inch wheelbase Escape demonstrated energized driving dynamics and satisfying power, but night-time driving was hindered by low-beam headlights that shortchanged on forward illumination. Front wheel drive Escape SE with 1.6-liter engine mated to 6-speed automatic transmission collects estimated mpg of 23 city/32 highway and carries a MSRP of $25,550.
