The 11th-generation Toyota Corolla updates the presentation. For starters, the 2014 car has a larger footprint. With a 106.3-inch wheelbase (versus the previous 102.4-inch wheelbase) and a re-tuned suspension, Corolla serves up a very comfortable ride. During a week-long test drive, the Corolla was impressively easy-to-handle. Commutes were drama-free, so no squeaks, rattles or other irritants. The test driven Corolla LE Eco Plus also flaunted its fuel-smart attitude, derived from attributes that include a continuously variable transmission with intelligent shifting (CVTi-S), low-rolling resistance tires, and underbody covers.

Powering the Corolla’s new LE Eco Plus is a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder producing 140 horsepower at 6100 rpm and 126 pounds-feet of torque at 4000 rpm. The engine’s Valvematic valve train technology helps pump up the fuel economy about 5% and adds eight horsepower versus the 1.8- liter 4-cylinder fitted with dual VVT-i technology. (Toyota’s Valvematic system provides continuously variable timing--lift and phasing--on the intake valves.) Engine powering the LE Eco Plus mates to Corolla’s CVTi-S, which is the first pulley-style continuously variable transmission for Toyota in North America. Corolla Le Eco Plus carries a MSRP of $19,400 and collects estimated mpg of 30 city and 40 highway.
