The driving experience is definitely satisfying behind the wheel of the Kia Optima. This midsize sedan provides peppy 4-cylinder power, crisp handling, and a silky smooth ride (as noted in the 2012 KJB Syndicate review). While the car is essentially unchanged for the 2013 model year, that’s not a bad thing. For the detail-purists, the Kia badge on the hood, trunk, and steering wheel is slightly altered in appearance. The 2013 model adds a Limited trim to its existing LX, EX, and SX packages. Kia Limited provides several unique touches, including Nappa leather seats, wood accents in the cabin, a first aid kit, 18-inch chrome wheels, LED daytime running lights, and red brake calipers.
Kia LX and EX versions are powered by a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder that releases 200 horsepower at 6300 rpm and 186 pounds-feet of torque at 4250 rpm. The 2.4-liter mates to either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. Kia SX’s 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder churns out 274 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 269 pounds-feet of torque at 4500 rpm and mates to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The four-door provides a very roomy interior for front and rear seat riders, and the 15.4 cubic foot trunk can accommodate a golf bag, luggage as well as groceries. Optima EX with 6-speed automatic transmission collects estimated mpg of 24 city and 35 highway and carries a MSRP of $23,500.
