The completely redesigned 2013 Chevrolet Malibu rakes in several firsts for the nameplate, including the most fuel efficient via the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder powered Malibu Eco. A 32-cell, 0.5 kW lithium-ion battery and a liquid-cooled, electric motor-generator underscore the Malibu Eco’s eAssist system. The 115-volt lithium-ion battery and 15 kW motor generator provide a performance boost of up to 15 horsepower (11 kW) during heavy acceleration demands. Malibu Eco’s 65-pound power pack is stowed between the rear seat and trunk. Good news: the packaging design still enables trunk access via the split-folding rear seat. The Malibu Eco mild hybrid sedan has 13.2 cubic feet of trunk space compared to 16.3 cubic feet of cargo trunk space for the non-hybrid Malibu midsize sedan.

Malibu Eco features electronically controlled aero shutters in the lower front grille. When the shutters are closed, airflow moves around the vehicle’s front and down the vehicle’s sides as opposed to air flowing through the lower air-intake opening. Determining factors for when the shutters are open or closed: engine coolant temperature and vehicle speed. The 8th-generation Malibu also features an all-new cabin that’s quieter and roomier than the past version. Malibu’s wheelbase is 107.8 inches, which is 4.5 inches shorter than the previous model. The 62-inch front and rear tracks gain more than 2 inches in width versus the prior model. Malibu Eco’s estimated mpg is 25 city and 37 highway. MSRP of Malibu Eco (2SA trim) with 6-speed automatic transmission is $26,845.
