The Lancer Evolution knows how to move f-a-s-t. As Mitsubishi’s highest performing Lancer model, the Evolution is a power-pusher. That speed is complimented by grippy tires (Yokohama 245/40R18 low-profile asymmetrical performance tires), an all-wheel drive system (Super All- Wheel Control), a helical gear-type limited slip front differential, and Brembo brakes (4-piston front calipers with 13.8-inch rotors and 2-piston rear calipers with 13-inch rotors). From a body perspective, the sports sedan has an aluminum hood, roof and fenders as well as an oversized rear spoiler. The test driven Lancer Evolution GSR handled curves and straightaways effortlessly. And the short-toss, 5-speed manual gear shifter didn’t provoke steering wheel torque.
Lancer Evolution’s power provider is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that produces 291 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 300 pounds-feet of torque at 4000 rpm. From a performance standpoint, the four-door Evolution kicks up the speed volume. And even though the 104.3-inch wheelbase car serves up a revving good time, the cabin doesn’t match expectations. The bland interior is surrounded by poor sight lines, namely the towering rear spoiler. Available in two trims (GSR and MR), the Lancer Evolution has a 6.9 cubic foot trunk. Lancer Evolution GSR carries an MSRP of $34,695 and collects estimated mpg of 17 city and 23 highway.
