The all-new Hyundai Elantra GT hatchback offers nifty driving dynamics, a fact confirmed again and again during a one-week test drive. With its sport-tuned suspension, the hatchback has higher rear spring rates and a stiffer twist beam than the Elantra sedan. A big reason for the hatchback’s nimbleness is its weight. Elantra GT’s weight is 2,784 pounds, making it the lightest 5-door hatchback in the compact segment. Powering the hatchback is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that churns out an estimated 148 horsepower at 6500 rpm and an estimated 131 pounds-feet of torque at 4700 rpm. The engine mates to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Stowage spots include a cooled glovebox, sunglass holder, bottle holders in the doors, and four cupholders (two in front and two in the rear). The cargo zone provides 23 cubic feet of space with rear seats upright and 51 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat. Elantra GT’s driver can choose the steering style (comfort, normal, or sport) via an all-new Driver Selectable Steering Mode that adjusts the power-assist based on the selection. Safety items include a rearview camera (concealed behind the rear hatch’s H-badge until needed) and a driver’s knee airbag (an Elantra first). The 104.3-inch wheelbase Elantra GT’s MSRP is 19,395. When fitted with the automatic transmission, the estimated mpg is 28 city and 39 highway.
