The latest version of the tC sports coupe is peppier and more fuel efficient than the model that debuted in 2004. tC’s new chiseled look gets support from a stronger engine (a 2.5-liter 4- cylinder that produces 180 horsepower and 173 pounds-feet of torque) versus the 2.4-liter 4- cylinder that released 161 horsepower and 162 pounds-feet of torque for model years 2005-2010. That new engine mates to either a six-speed automatic transmission or six-speed manual transmission. (The pre-2011 tC offered a choice of a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.) In its latest incarnation, the tC uses electronic power steering as a replacement to the former model’s power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering.
For the 2012 model year, tC adds capability to the standard Pioneer audio system via Bluetooth connectivity as well as HD radio technology that allows the user to stream music from cell phone or MP3 device. Standard features on the tC include panoramic power moonroof, air conditioning, cruise control as well as a leather-trimmed tilt/telescopic 3-spoke steering wheel with audio controls. The next-generation tC pumps up the fuel economy. Whether fitted with the manual or the automatic transmission, the estimated mpg is 23 city and 31 highway (compared to the former 5-speed manual’s 20 city/27 highway and the automatic transmission’s 21 city/29 highway). MSRP on Scion tC with 6-speed manual transmission is $18,275.
