There’s a new base engine for the Forester 2.5X model, but that doesn’t equate to a boost in horsepower. But instead of reaching 170 horsepower at 6000 rpm, the new engine reaches 170 horsepower at 5800 rpm. The latest 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Boxer engine grabs 174 pounds-feet of torque at 4100 rpm versus the former engine’s 170 at 4400 rpm. Compared to the previous SOHC 2.5-liter engine, the 2011 powerplant’s technical differences include direct injection, a DOHC with chain-driven camshafts, and cylinder head-mounted fuel injectors.

The test-driven Forester was nimble on the highway and didn’t hiccup across pothole-riddled roads. Long-legged passengers found the front passenger and rear seat comfortable. The sight lines weren’t impaired by skyscraper rear headrests or oddly angled A-pillars. And the cargo bay was right-sized for grocery buying binges. What wasn’t impressive was the optional TomTom Navigation system, which is removable/portable. The 4.3-inch touch screen was simply too small, making it hard to read street names and obtain other information while driving. Forester 2.5X Premium has a MSRP of $23,495. When fitted with the 4-speed automatic transmission, estimated mpg is 21 city/27 highway.
