The little car that feels big and drives large spotlights a number of exterior and interior revisions for 2011. Cosmetic changes to MINI Cooper S models include larger fog-lights, new bumper fascia, functional brake ducts, new taillights, new exterior paint colors (like spice orange metallic), and new wheel designs. While not a radical redress, the cabin pops with extra style and new color choices. MINI Cooper still retains its funky appeal opting for easy-to-use toggle switches and other control interfaces as well as easy-to-read gauges—including a center-dash located speedometer housed within a wildly over-sized dial. New audio and infotainment choices include the optional MINI Connected with Navigation.

Cooper S’ turbocharged, direct injection 4-cylinder engine tacks on nine additional horsepower (now 181) while increasing the mpg tally. The technology tweaks/options for 2011 include a ‘popping’ sound on deceleration (Cooper S model only), auto-dimming side mirrors, adaptive headlights, and software commands to diminish torque steer during aggressive acceleration and bump-steer in turns. During a one-week test drive of the Cooper S hardtop, the car’s incredibly zippy performance and unique ride and handling personality continually impressed the driver. A 6-foot-4 tall front seat passenger appreciated the richly generous head and legroom. The Cooper S hardtop with turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder mated to a 6-speed Getrag transmission collects estimated mpg of 27 city/36 highway and carries a MSRP of $23,000.
