Performance driving defines BMW vehicles. And following a one-week test drive of the 335i Coupe, this driver confirms that this BMW car is responsive, is fast, and has an exceedingly smooth highway ride. The big change for the 2011 model year is a 3.0-liter inline-6 with a single turbocharger that showcases a ‘twin-scroll’ housing design. As a replacement to the previous twin-turbo 6-cylinder, the new engine is the first BMW inline-6 to use a turbocharger, Valvetronic variable intake technology and direct fuel injection. Like the last engine, the power output is 300 horsepower/300 pounds-feet of peak torque. (Peak torque is reached at 1200 rpm versus the predecessor’s 1000 rpm, and top-level torque is available through 5000 rpm.) The technical improvements mean BMW’s current engine is more fuel-efficient than the predecessor.

The 335i Coupe’s exterior (featuring new taillights and side mirror design) is as distinctive as the power source. With comfortable seats and a smart cockpit layout, the interior helps keep the driver focused on driving tasks. An optional navigation system offers the ability to view things in 3D, but the vehicle alarm system also puts things in perspective. An alarm sounds and hazards/headlights flash if the door, hood or trunk lid is opened, if the interior motion-sensor detects movement inside the vehicle, if incline changes (i.e. jacking up the car), or if there is an interruption of the battery’s power supply. The BMW 335i Coupe with standard 6-speed manual transmission collects estimated mpg of 19 city/28 highway and carries a MSRP of $42,650.
