The Scion tC follows an uncommon path. Although essentially unchanged from the 2008 to the 2009 model year, the tC packs quite an appeal-punch. First off, the standard equipment list is mighty varied, offering typical fare like cruise control and air conditioning as well as atypical treatments like fully reclining front seats (think sleep position), one-touch driver’s seat with track and seat angle memory, and a rear seat that can recline 45 degrees. The sports coupe, ranking as the top seller in Scion’s four-vehicle line-up, has a practical side. But its flashy side can’t be ignored. A burnt orange instrument gauge illumination and the midnight-neon blue LED under dash and cupholder illumination zones (a $250 extra) are dandy. And it’s smart to offer a toggle switch that can de-activate the neon blue zones.

Powering the tC is a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder that pumps out 161 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 162 pounds-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. The power-growl is a constant low-roar during early acceleration – a definite nod to the young and young-at-heart crowd of buyers – when the car is fitted with the sport muffler (a $525 option). tC’s four-wheel independent suspension and 103-inch wheelbase help make this a fairly nimble coupe. Scion tC jams the tunes with a standard six-speaker Pioneer 160-watt AM/FM/CD that is MP3/WMA CD and satellite radio capable. When the 4-cylinder is mated to the four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, the tC picks up estimated mpg of 21 city and 29 highway. MSRP of the Scion is $17,800.
