Nitro moves a few previously optional features to the standard fare list for the 2009 model year. Floor mats, a rear dome lamp, and an automatic transmission are now standard equipment on all three Nitro models (SE, SLT and R/T). The Nitro SE and SLT come with a standard 4-speed automatic transmission. (In the 2008 model year, the standard transmission on the Nitro SXT with 3.7-liter engine was a 6-speed manual.) The 4.0-liter V6 that powers Nitro R/T uses a re-tuned muffler, but the five-speed automatic remains as Nitro R/T’s standard transmission. Other changes in 2009 include stiffer rear axle shafts, re-tuned springs and shocks as well as a re-tuned brake booster. Since changes were made to improve the brake pedal feel in 2009 model year, the Dodge Nitro R/T with standard 20-inch aluminum wheels and performance tires delivers a nuanced road-to-driver connection.

Since its introduction in 2007, Dodge Nitro has found its niche as a charmer. The midsize SUV presents itself as a capable road cruiser as well as an adroit provider of travel space for passengers and for cargo. The fold-flat front passenger seat and the fold-flat second row seats are handy hauling helpers, but the standard Load ‘N Go cargo floor (on Nitro SLT and R/T) that slides rearward 18 inches is a real gem for loading and unloading boxes and other items. Powering the Nitro is one of two engines: a 3.7-liter V6 (210 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 235 pounds-feet of torque at 4000 rpm), or a 4.0-liter V6 (260 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 265 pounds-feet of torque at 4200 rpm.) Dodge Nitro R/T 4x4 collects per gallon fuel estimates of 16 city and 20 highway and carries a MSRP of $25,420.
