Jeep and lack of flash went by the wayside years ago, but it is still impressive to get behind the wheel of Jeep that is flush with creature comforts. For the 2009 model year, the Jeep Commander puts passengers (who can pick from three rows of theater-style seating) in a pampered-state. The new offerings include a larger rear DVD screen (9 inches versus the previous 8 inches), and a standard leather package that envelopes the upper front and rear door bolsters, the center consoled armrest as well as the front door grab handles. The Rear Entertainment System Group (a $1,720 package) includes SIRIUS Backseat TV. (Front passengers can view the 3 channels—Disney, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon—via the dashboard multi-media screen when the transmission is in park mode.)

A new 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with variable valve timing is more powerful than the previous HEMI engine. (The 2009 model year HEMI pounds out 357 horsepower and 389 pounds-feet of peak torque.) A 3.7-liter V6 and a 4.7-liter V8 flexible fuel (gasoline or E85 ethanol) engine are also offered. New exterior treatments in the 2009 model year include body-color mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and high-intensity discharge headlamps with an auto-leveling feature. The Commander Limited 4x4 with 4.7-liter V8 and five-speed automatic transmission means a towing capacity of up to 7,400 pounds. That same Commander collects estimated mpg of 13 city and 18 highway (with gasoline as the fuel) and carries an MSRP of $41,105.
