The third time might be the charm for the Volvo V70, not that the 2007 model year offering was a dud. But the 2008 version, a third-generation incarnation, cuts the performance choices and stands on a solo statement. Instead of various 5-cylinder engines, a new 3.2-liter inline 6-cylinder that produces 235 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 236 pounds-feet of torque at 3200 rpm is the power propellant. Engine is mated to a new six-speed automatic transmission. The new V70 borrows many of the same components and systems found on the Volvo S80 and the XC70. V70’s rear-end, which somewhat resembles the Volvo C30, features the glass in a lower profile than was the case on the previous wagon. From a styling perspective, the new wagon assumes a more sculptured, athletic appearance.

With rear seats upright, the wagon provides more than 33 cubic feet of space and that increases to more than 72 cubic feet with seats down. (There’s also a lockable under-floor bin in the cargo area.) The rear seat’s wide armrest (accessed by pushing a button) includes two cupholders and a shallow storage bin. On the safety side, the 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat features the world’s first standard height-adjustable integrated booster seat cushion. Another new for 2008 features is the next-generation Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) for driver and front seat passenger. Per gallon fuel estimates are 16 city and 24 highway. One very fine feature is the center cluster display that continually reports on the estimated driving range until a fuel fill-up is needed. V70’s MSRP is 32,465.
