Walking up two steps is a more grueling workout than getting in and out of the Mazda5 minivan. This vehicle’s step-in height is barely 15 inches from the ground. But this cool-looking low-rider has three rows of seats. The second row’s bucket seats offer more than 35 inches of legroom, while the 50/50-split bench third row seat provides riders with more than 30 inches of legroom. (Kids will be more comfortable than adults in the last row, though.) The third row bench seat can be adjusted so that one seat is upright and the other is flat, or both seats can be flat, or both can be in the upright position. The neat thing is that the various third row seat movements can be done in a matter of seconds and with about as much exertion as it took to get into this vehicle with manual-sliding doors. Mazda5’s interior was revamped for 2008, which equates to many new features, including front passenger inboard armrests, second row passenger outboard armrests and electroluminescent gauges.

The vehicle’s exterior was also revised, resulting in a new look via the front bumper fascia, grille, headlights and taillights. Mazda5, featuring fully independent front and rear suspension, is powered by a 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 153 horsepower at 4500 rpm and 148 pounds-feet of torque at 3500 rpm. For 2008, the engine mates to a five-speed automatic transmission; however, the Sport version can be fitted with a five-speed manual transmission. Mazda5 is sold in Sport, Touring and Grand Touring and all versions are fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels, rear wiper and washer, cruise control, air conditioning with pollen filter, second-row foldout table with cargo storage and dual cupholders, and much more. MPG counts of the Mazda5 with automatic transmission are 21 city and 27 highway. The MSRP of the Mazda5 Touring version is $20,610.
