As the first Jeep with three rows of seats, Commander entered the marketplace as a 2006 model. The 2008 model year means more Jeep vehicles in the portfolio than ever before and a new 4.7-liter V8 flex-fuel engine choice means the Commander can operate on ethanol/E85 or gasoline. The 305 horsepower/334 torque 4.7 V8 certainly helps move this 5,098-pound curb weight SUV – in its Limited 4x4 version – but the per gallon fuel economy estimates are not for the faint of heart. Commander has an abundantly plush interior, especially when the SUV is sporting the optional saddle brown leather seats.

Beyond the new flex-fuel engine, the Commander has a number of other new for 2008 features, including a two-row seating option (standard on the Sport R), an iPod interface, an eight-inch DVD screen with rear video entertainment system, a 115-volt power inverter, and Sirius backseat TV (optional on the Limited and Overland trims). Based off the Grand Cherokee platform, the three-row theater-seat styled Commander can accommodate seven passengers. Commander Limited 4x4’s MSRP is $38,925 and that vehicle’s estimated fuel economy (when equipped with the 4.7-liter V8 and an automatic transmission) is 13 city and 18 highway. The SUV is also offered with a 330 horsepower 5.7-liter HEMI engine and a 210 horsepower 3.7-liter V6.
