On a superficial level, there are two things that don’t mix well on the all-new Nitro: a drab exterior color and running boards. Nitro’s running boards (a $395 option) and the silver metallic exterior paint are a bit of a mismatch. A vibrant color looks better on this vehicle’s stout, strong posture, and running boards essentially distract from the muscle. But enough about personal choices, the Nitro – the first midsize SUV for the Dodge brand – has some really neat features, like a fold-flat front passenger seat, fold-flat second row seats, and the Load ‘N Go cargo floor – on SLT and R/T – that slides 18 inches rearward for easier loading/unloading. Nitro’s maximum cargo volume (75.6 cubic feet) is impressive, and the 6 cargo tie-down loops help hold the packages in place.

Nitro is offered with two engine choices: 3.7-liter V6 and a 4.0-liter V6. It’s available in rear wheel drive and four-wheel drive. The SUV features a new short- and long-arm front suspension and a 5-link rear suspension. Safety features include all-speed traction control, electronic roll mitigation, and a front fascia design with pedestrian protection in mind. Nitro supplies a fun ride that’s complimented by responsive steering. Options range from a $30 smoker’s package (removable ashtray and cigar lighter) to a $1,250 rear seat video package (gaming system and wireless headphones). The 4x2 Nitro with 3.7-liter engine and 4-speed automatic transmission has per gallon fuel numbers of 18 city/24 highway and a MSRP of $22635.
