Montego comes across as a behemoth transporter. It’s large on the inside and features a 21.2 cubic foot trunk, which can be expanded to 49.9 cubic feet when the split-rear seat is folded flat. Sold in Premier and Luxury trims, the Mercury Montego is available in front wheel drive or all wheel drive. (For most drives, the AWD-equipped sedan will be in front wheel drive unless a difference in speed between front wheels and rear wheels is detected and that’s when 100 percent of torque is transferred to the rear wheels.) The new-for-2006 items include a now standard leather-wrapped steering wheel with redundant audio controls, an optional rear seat DVD entertainment system, and a navigation system that’s optional on the Premier trim. Montego provides good night vision via High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps.

The four-door sedan is powered by a 3.0-liter Duratec V6 that produces 203 horsepower at 5750 rpm and 205 pounds-feet of peak torque at 4800 rpm. The front wheel drive Montego’s engine mates with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the AWD is fitted with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Montego’s CVT – during a one week test drive – seemed to be constantly working to accomplish gear shifts and a slight shudder could be felt from the shifter. This reviewer has never adored CVTs and this outing did nothing to change that opinion. The Montego Premier cakes on the extras with such adornments as 18-inch/15-spoke alloy wheels, heated driver and front passenger seats, adjustable pedals, and memory seats. (It’s a pity that the driver is ready to roll before the seat’s memory can complete its automatic seat position movements.) Montego’s 19-gallon tank holds the fuel for estimated 19 city/26 highway per gallon mileage for the AWD car. MSRP of the Montego Premier AWD is $28,730.
