The Aerio SX (designation for the five-passenger sport crossover) continues its reign as an out-of-the-ordinary small car offering. Although it would be nice if engineers would re-configure the rear seatbelt design so that the ‘hanging belt within rearview mirror’ would vanish, this Suzuki vehicle deserves marketplace consideration. Aerio is a spry ensemble packaged with a 2.3-liter, 16-valve, 4-cylinder engine (producing 155 horsepower at 5400 rpm and 152 pounds-feet torque at 3000 rpm) mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. Front wheel drive is standard, but the QuadGrip all-wheel-drive – which automatically and progressively transfers up to 50 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels when needed – gives this little buggy added spunk.

For 2006, the Aerio (also sold in sedan body style) features a new six-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system. The low-apron exterior gives the Aerio SX a brawny presentation, capping a wide range of standard fare that includes air conditioning, driver and front passenger airbags, 60/40 split fold rear seats, cruise control, fog lamps, and heated/power side mirrors. With rear seat folded, the Aerio SX provides 63.7 cubic feet of space. Aerio SX’s triangle-shaped forward side windows increase the driver’s outward vision. The 97.6-inch wheelbase Aerio SX with AWD has estimated per gallon fuel numbers of 24 city/29 highway. MSRP is $16,999.
