The big news with the Escape is that the 2005 model year means the addition of a hybrid, but there are plenty of noteworthy changes with the non-hybrid sport utility vehicle, too. New front and rear fascias, jewel-like headlights, integrated fog lamps, and honeycomb grille underscore the exterior revisions. Also spotlighted are four new colors (sonic blue, norsea blue, silver metallic, and titanium green). The small SUV compliments the exterior makeover with re-designed gauges, console, and shifter, adding a depth of coziness to the feeling of freedom that the Escape provides to driver and passengers. Escape can be fitted with either a 4-cylinder (153 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 152 pounds-feet peak torque at 4250 rpm) or a V6 (200 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 196 pounds-feet peak torque at 4850 rpm). The new 4-cylinder engine – which provides a smoother idle – can be mated with an automatic transmission.

On the safety side, the body structure has been revamped in order to perform better in front end crashes. Front and rear seats have head restraints and three-point safety belts. Anti-lock brakes are now standard equipment, and the V6 powered 4WD Escape have discs at all four wheels. Available trim packages are: XLS, XLT, Limited and the XLS Blast. The Blast version includes privacy glass and an exclusive blazing copper exterior paint. Escape provides an 8-inch ground clearance. Turning circle (curb-to-curb) is 35.4 feet. Maximum towing capacity with V6 engine is 3500 pounds. Estimated miles per gallon with 4WD Escape with 6-cylinder engine and automatic transmission is 18 city and 22 highway and a MSRP of $25,855.
