From the 2003 to 2004 model year, Pontiac Vibe didn’t change much – XM satellite radio, fusion orange exterior and 17-inch all season tires are now offered. Last year’s one-week road evaluation was with the Vibe GT, which matches a 180 horsepower four-cylinder engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. The manual transmission was a disappointment, especially from a shifting perspective. This year, a one-week test drive of the base Vibe, equipped with a 1.8-liter, 130 horsepower four-cylinder engine and four-speed automatic transmission, elicited pure delight. Looking for a base model vehicle that really deserves merit? Put your eyes on the Vibe.

Vibe’s interior is quite inviting with four scoop-styled gauges backlit with a red hue that can be brightness adjusted via a turn dial on the lower dash. Steering is very responsive, and the steering wheel is devoid of clutter. There are two power outlets – one on dash and one inside the console box (which also includes two cupholders, covered storage bin, cell phone holder and coinholder). Need cargo room? Rear seats fold flat to provide 54.1 cubic feet of space. Want a hearty list of standard fare? Base model givens include air conditioning, dual outside power side mirrors, adjustable roof rack, rear window wiper/defroster, and front fog lights. Per gallon fuel estimates for Vibe with the 4-cylinder base engine with automatic transmission are 29 city/34 highway. MSRP of base Vibe is $16,485.
