The new MAZDASPEED MX-5 Miata gives this normal quickster a power boost by enhancing performance in specific ways. The biggest change is the addition of a turbocharger. That appointment turns the 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine into a 178- horsepower/166 peak torque scrambler, which is 25 percent and 33 percent more respectively than the normally aspirated Miata. There are lots of additional tweaks, including a chassis drop of 7mm via shorter springs with increased spring rates. The suspension is also retuned. And in a first for a Miata, the MAZDASPEED MX-5 is offered with a 17-inch wheel and tire package.

This unique Miata separates itself from the pack, too, via special badging, smoked headlamps, an altered front under-spoiler with recessed fog lamps as well as rear under-spoiler, rear deck spoiler and oversized exhaust tip. The two-door, convertible is a fun drive, and that’s underscored by the quick-tossing manual six-speed transmission. This snazzy little zoom-zoom machine isn’t an underachiever on the gasoline count, providing per gallon mileage estimates of 20 city/26 highway. MSRP of the MAZDASPEED MX-5 Miata is $25,500.
