Usually a 4-cylinder engine isn’t considered a monster provider of power, but on the Acura RSX Type S this small engine punches with 142 pounds-feet of peak torque and 200 horsepower – 40 more than the standard RSX model. For added high-performance fun, the 2.0-liter engine mates to a 6-speed manual transmission. Via double and triple cone synchronizers, shifting through the gears can be done in quick order since the gearshift tosses are just short throws. After nearly 400 driving miles, the sports coupe kept gas consumption to a minimum. The estimated fuel economy numbers (24 city/31 highway) are indeed another attractive point about this car.

RSX Type S hasn’t shortchanged on its interior or cargo space. The 4-gauge cluster fits the high-performance lifestyle as does the material used on the dashboard and center console. With 50/50 split-fold rear seats, the car offers ample hatch space. (And a cargo cover – one that doesn’t actually look like a flimsy design afterthought – is a nice appointment.) Following its introduction in 2001, the RSX has stayed the course on its standard and optional fare – one exception is that the ’04 model adds heated power side mirrors. The Acura RSX Type S makes a bold statement for an entry-level performance coupe. MSRP is $23,320.
