Money moves fast, so pay attention. Japanese automaker Mitsubishi provides a snappy-looking, less than $20,000 sport utility-wagon via the all-new Outlander. Sharing the Lancer car platform, Outlander (sold as Airtrek in Japan) is offered in front wheel or full-time all wheel drive. With two trim options (LS and XLS), Outlanders chiseled features net the vehicle a drag coefficient of 0.43 meaning its aerodynamic attributes shave past the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV, and Subaru Forester. Outlander is powered by a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder that produces 140 horsepower at 5000 rpm. The muscle is satisfying, but a V6 option would provide those who desire more power an alternative choice.
Standard appointments (whether LS or XLS trimmed) include front and rear stabilizer bars, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, electric rear window defroster with timer, air conditioning, 12-volt power outlets, rear seat center armrest, and map lights. The interior while far from exotic does have some appealing touches, such as circular vents that close flush and open via a tap to the bottom indent. The rear seat armrest features a dual cup holder, but the design could be improved with a sturdier beverage storage zone. Per gallon mileage estimates for the two-wheel drive Outlander are 21 city/26 highway. MSRP is $19,490.
