Neon – in contrast to its name – doesn’t put a bright light on itself. The small car isn’t a flashy showpiece, but it does merit attention. While the car is already a strong contender, the 2003 alterations – including new front and rear fascias, headlamps and tail lamps; new steering wheel featuring Dodge medallion; new wheels/wheel covers; in-dash, six-disc CD player (on SXT and R/T models) – make this an even more impressive vehicle. Neon SXT’s sneak appeal is that is offers much more than expected for an under $15,000 base price. The presentation includes an uncluttered dashboard, a good manual shifter, responsive steering, and on-the-mark interior fit/finish.

Sold in choice of four trims (base SE, SXT, R/T, and SRT-4), Neon’s base engine is a 2.0-liter SOHC, 16-valve, 4-cylinder that produces 132 horsepower. Engine mates to a standard manual five-speed manual transmission. Mile per gallon estimates with that powertrain are 29 city/35 highway. Although the 2003 model utilizes new engine mounts as a means of muffling noise, Neon is still in need of further noise reduction treatment. Standard features on Neon SXT include air conditioning, body color door handles and side moldings, power trunk lid release, power door locks, remote keyless entry, and power, foldaway side mirrors. MSRP for the four-door, front-wheel-drive, steel unibody Neon SXT compact car is $14,895.
