Remember the El Camino – part pick-up truck, part car. Subaru blends a car/truck in the form of the new Baja, which is based on the Legacy/Outback platform. Baja is quite the eye-catcher, and the chance of someone seeing a ‘car’ when looking at the vehicle is nil. Because the vehicle can be reconfigured in the rear seating area and cargo bed via a Switchback system (basically a second tailgate/insert behind the rear bench seatback), Baja essentially offers a ‘car-like’ pass-through from cabin to cargo area. Additional truck bed space is possible via attaching an accessory bed extender, taking the bed from 41.5 inches to 60.5 inches.

Baja, powered by a 2.5-liter, 165 horsepower/166 peak torque four-cylinder engine mated to a standard five-speed manual transmission, offers an up to 2.400-pound towing capacity. For off-road treks, the vehicle provides 7.3 inches of ground clearance and four- wheel independent suspension. There are more than 60 standard appointments on the Baja, including air conditioning, digital outside temperature display, power moon roof, and cruise control. Baja lives up to its name – it’s fun, handles well, it’s fun, and the cuteness is appealing. MSRP for the all wheel drive Baja is $23,995, or $24,795 with the optional four-speed electronic automatic transmission.
