The 2002 MPV scores solid hits, showing that specific changes – done with a purpose in mind – do make a difference. First off, MPV gains a more powerful engine, a 3.0-liter V6 that produces 200 horsepower and achieves 90 percent of its maximum torque from 1,800 to 5,500 rpm. While the new engine improves on performance and is aided by a new five-speed automatic transmission, that’s only part of the story. Suspension alterations (including a larger rear stabilizer bar) give the driver better control in turning maneuvers. Like other Mazda vehicles, MPV provides crisp steering wheel response. On the unpleasant side, MPV collects and distributes too much road noise into the cabin.

One of the best features of MPV is the power slide left and right rear doors. Power slide can be engaged via the remote key fob or by pressing a driver-accessed button or passenger-accessed buttons on the B-pillars. (The thick size of the B pillars partially obstructs the driver’s outside vehicle views.) Second row bucket seats can be slid together to create a bench seat, while third row seats can fold and stow into the floor to create additional space. Rear compartment’s12-volt power outlet provides a maximum surge for the tailgate party that utilizes third row seating as a ‘flip rearward’ bench. Per gallon mileage estimates are 18city/24 highway. Suggested base price is $27,192.
